I went to bed at 11:00pm last night. I was so exhausted. Eric was asleep before me. I could have slept all day if I wanted to, but I was up by 8:00am. I guess 9 hours is as much as I need! I set up all my tools and materials for creating more jewelry mosaic mirrors. I wanted to get as much done as I could today, because I am bringing more to Gili Anna tomorrow. It should be quiet in La Jolla tomorrow, since it’s SUPERBOWL SUNDAY, but who knows? Anyway, I know where Eric will be – in his chair watching the game!
When Eric woke up we watched last night’s episode of MONK (which was fantastic, as usual) and then I did three loads of laundry. Eric was just lying around and all of a sudden he said, “Well, I’m going to roll down the hill and then walk the bicycle back up.” I don’t know why, but he went out for a ride.
He didn’t gear up, he didn’t even wear a helmet. He just put on jeans, a t-shirt and a windbreaker and left. He came back less than 2 hours later. I don’t know where he went or how much he rode, but at least he had his behind on the bicycle seat today. I was amazed. He said he wasn’t riding anymore, but he can’t resist, I guess. Or he just knows, deep down inside, that it’s the best thing for him.
When he came back he relaxed until it was time to take a shower, get dressed and leave for GUYS AND DOLLS at the SAN DIEGO MUSICAL THEATRE in El Cajon. We left at 6:00pm. The theatre is 18 miles from our apartment and we were there in 15 minutes. We found a nice Italian restaurant right across the street from the theatre called MANGIA BENE, and had a delicious dinner.

I had a bowl of seafood chowder and a fresh spinach salad with goat cheese, pine nuts, kalamata olives and tomatoes tossed in a warm pancetta dressing. Eric had a cup of seafood chowder and the eggplant parmigiana with a side of spaghetti. I had one piece of their delicious fresh-baked bread and Eric ate the rest. He’s always been a big bread lover! We each had a cup of coffee for dessert (mine was decaf). I think Eric thought he’d need help staying awake for the show!
That wasn’t the case at all. The show was really well done. Everyone had a beautiful voice, the choreography was great, the costumes lovely and the sets were good. We had wonderful seats and since we have a subscription we’ll be sitting in the same seats for all three shows. They were about 10 rows back and right smack in the center. Perfect seats, as far as I’m concerned.
I’ve had this discussion with many friends and family and I consider myself an expert in this area. I think that a show is better enjoyed from further back. For a play the first row might not be so bad, but for a musical, it’s the worst. You’re too close to see the “big picture” and you’re just looking at people’s knees while they’re dancing! When you’re further back you can see the entire cast in big musical numbers and enjoy the entire set. Besides, when you’re very close you can see all the stage make-up and it kind of takes away the fantasy.
Anyway, I had forgotten some of the musical numbers, since it’s been a long time since I’ve seen the show, but there are some I just love. My favorite number is SIT DOWN YOU’RE ROCKING THE BOAT. My friend, Joe, whom Eric and I just visited in L.A., did GUYS & DOLLS four times – playing one of the leads – Nicely Nicely Johnson. I saw Joe as Nicely Nicely two times. His character sings SIT DOWN and it’s such a great number. The guy tonight had a beautiful voice and did a great job. I really enjoyed it!
After the show we came home and Eric went right to sleep. I stayed up and watched TOM BRADY (New England Patriots) host Saturday Night Live. It was a repeat, but I had never seen it before.
I really enjoyed a night out at the theatre. The next musical in the series is BYE BYE BIRDIE in June. I love that show, too! Can’t wait!
