Last Day At This Desk!

Today was my last day at this desk on the 6th floor.  Starting tomorrow I will be in HR for the rest of the week.  Starting next week I’ll be doing my 4/4 double-duty!  The boss was in, so we had a lot to do today.  He was giving an in-house presentation at 3:00pm and we had to prepare 30 color copies of a PowerPoint presentation, which he would also use in a slide-show.  We also had to send an email announcement to about 400 people, so we were busy!

At some point this morning I went into my boss’ office, reminded him that this was my last day and thanked him for 5 great months.  I said it was great working for him and I really appreciated everything.  He apologized for not keeping me busy, and I said, “That’s okay.  I got to do a lot of great reading the past few months!”  I could see he was pleased and happy, and a little surprised, that I thanked him, but really – in all – it has been a great experience and he’s a really nice guy.

Nine of us are going to lunch tomorrow (not the guy I worked for, but the other people I worked with).  I had to pick the restaurant and make the reservation, get directions, etc.  Since I don’t know the area, I asked for suggestions from the other invitees.  We settled on a place called POSEIDON ON THE BEACH.  We’ll be sitting right by the water under big umbrellas.  I told one of the guys, who sits right near me, that I’m going to wear my bikini.  He said he’s going to wear his speedo.  So, I told my trainee, “I’m wearing my bikini and he’s wearing his speedo.”  So, then the guy said, “I think we’re going to have eight cancellations!”  This guy is so funny and we were both laughing so hard.  It was great fun.

I’m really looking forward to lunch tomorrow, because it’s a very young group.  We’re having it to welcome a new intern who just graduated from Graduate School.  The older people in the group are in their late 30s and two are 40, so I’ve got them all beat by at least 10 years!  Nevertheless, I have a lot of fun with them and they’re a great crew.  This is a fond farewell to me, because although I’ll be seeing them every day, I won’t be working with them anymore.  Welcome to the new guy; goodbye, Peppy!

My ride had “team building” this afternoon, and they went to play miniature golf (I told you this firm was great!), so Eric came to pick me up at 5:00pm.  When we got home we made dinner – a few spinach ravioli (more from the box Eric purchased at COSTCO a few trips ago), a salad, and some steamed broccoli.  We made some salad for Conrad, but – like most of my birds – he won’t go near it.  They tell you all the great stuff you should get your birds to eat, but they don’t tell you HOW!  With our last bird (Birdy) we used to practically starve him trying to get him to eat something other than seed, but – no go.  Looks like Conrad is built from the same stuff.  He goes for the seed, but won’t go for much else.  I gave him some fresh spinach, cucumber (without the seeds), and a little bit of pasta (believe it or not, they’re supposed to eat bread, pasta, rice and beans!).  Nothin’!  I’m hoping he’ll figure out it’s good stuff eventually!

We found out tonight that our niece, Melissa, has been ill and was in the hospital.  We tried to call her mom (Eric’s sister, Robin) to get details, but only were able to leave a message.  GET WELL SOON, MELISSA!  WE LOVE YOU!  Her birthday is next week, and I feel terrible that she’s sick.

I brought my latest  DICK FRANCIS book home from the office today, because I had some other stuff to carry to my new desk tomorrow and figured I’d bring it home with me.  There’s nothing on TV tonight, so I’m probably going to finish the book before I go to sleep.  That means that Eric will have to make a trip to the library for me tomorrow!  The best thing we ever discovered was that the library is down the block!  It’s so fabulous!  I already told him I want to read the other novels by Peter Spiegelman – BLACK MAPS, DEATH’S LITTLE HELPERS and NO WAY HOME.  I really enjoyed RED CAT, so I’m sure I’ll enjoy these others, too!  After that, I’m sure it will be more Dick Francis, until I’ve read his entire repertoire!

Do you believe it’s July already – and that the biggest summer festivities are this Friday?  There’s a lot going on in San Diego, so Eric and I will have to figure out where to go and what to do.  We heard on the news that they’re canceling a lot of firework displays, because they’re afraid they’ll start fires.  It’s so sad, but I guess it makes sense.  I just hope some idiots aren’t setting off the illegal kind, which will more likely start a fire.  I’ve never been a fan of fireworks, unless they were the big, flashy, professional kind.  Otherwise, I think they’re too dangerous and someone always ends up getting hurt.

I’m really enjoying having Conrad to look at, talk to and play with.  He’s very sweet and inquisitive.  Here’s a funny thing:  When he sees me eat, it makes him hungry and then HE goes and eats!  Unfortunately, he passes right by the salad and eats his seed.  I told Eric I think the seeds are like potato chips and birds are just like people – they bypass the healthy stuff for the junk food!

I decided that I’m going to leave him fresh fruits and vegetables all day – with no seed.  Then, when I get home from work, I’ll give him seed, so he can have some of that, too, but if he’s hungry all day he’ll be forced to eat the good stuff.  I’ll see if that works!
