Here’s the thing about San Diego: If the company's summer picnic was in New York, everyone would have their fingers crossed that it didn’t rain, or at least that it was a nice day. Here, if it wasn’t a nice day, it would be all over the news! In San Diego, you don’t have to worry about having an ourdoor affair. The chances of it being rained out are slim. There’s no such thing as a “rain date” in San Diego! Is that wonderful?
I went to bed at 11:15pm. I woke up a few times and fell back to sleep and finally woke up for good at 9:30am. I felt that was respectable. I did hear Little Drummer Boy talking, and then after I woke up he started drumming, so I was glad I got up when I did!
My ex-boss asked me to type labels for some file folders for his personal files at home (which I have done before). I don’t know if he asked me because he’s not comfortable asking his new assistant, or because he likes the way I do it, but I was happy to help.
I couldn’t find the right size label and supplies are hard to come by at this firm, so I decided to bring the list home, type the labels there (because I have the right size) and then bring the labels to work on Monday and just affix them to the pendaflex tabs and the file folder tabs.
He and I had a great discussion about PETER SPIEGELMAN’S books. He loaned me RED CAT, which I loved and then I took BLACK MAPS and DEATH’S LITTLE HELPER out of the library. I already finished BLACK MAPS and just started DEATH’S LITTLE HELPER, which I think the boss will love, because it’s about investment banking!
He bought the first two on Amazon.com, which is something I used to do, until I found out the library is DOWN THE BLOCK! It’s so convenient and easy! Even if I’m late returning a book (which I was) and have to pay a dollar or two (which I did), it just seems like a donation to the library, which is very worthy! It’s still much cheaper than buying!
So, I spoke to my niece, Ashley, today. Eric’s been staying with Susan since he got to New York and he’s been spending quality time with Ashley, which really makes me happy! She just graduated middle school and we sent her a check to buy something. I asked her what she was going to buy and I was SO surprised by her answer!
Turns out, Ashley, who is 13, is very interested in photography! She has purchased three antique cameras and saw another one, but didn’t have the money to purchase it. Now, she said she can have it and she was very happy!
She told me she got a new camera for graduation and loves taking pictures. Another niece, April, is very interested in photography, and has taken classes, so I’m sure she will be someone Ashley can learn from.
I told Ashley that both my sisters are avid photographers and take fabulous pictures. I’ve never been into it, but now that I have my new digital, I do enjoy taking pictures more.
Our friend, Geri, is a fantastic photographer, and was a photography teacher for many years. She loves to take pictures and always has her camera handy. I’m glad to know that Ashley has a passion for something, and that it is something as worthwhile as photography! I also love the fact that she likes antique cameras and told her I would be on the lookout for any I could find here in San Diego. I have seen them at the flea market!
Right after I hung up with Ashley, my niece Jessica (the bride-to-be) called. She just heard Eric is in NY and was hoping to see him. She was on her way out to see my niece, Melissa, who was released from the hospital (wheee!). I’m so happy she’s out, even though they’re not done treating her yet. They just said she could take the antibiotics at home and will return to the hospital for further treatment. They really have not figured out what to do about her treatment, and it may require another hospital stay, but we’re hoping it won’t! Anyway, we’re glad she’s home!
I spoke to Eric three times before I left for the party at 2:00pm. He is doing well and is trying to fit in as many friends and family as possible before he heads back.
My ride picked me up, and I got to meet her husband, who was SO nice and absolutely adorable. They make the cutest couple. They were so sweet to me and made sure I didn’t feel like a “third wheel.” Our apartment is just a 10 minute drive to Mission Beach, where the WAVEHOUSE is located.
When we got to the WAVEHOUSE, I was astounded to see all there was to see and do. There’s a big roller coaster, called the BIG DIPPER, which has been there for over 50 years. There’s also a HUGE indoor pool (I guess it’s what they call “Olympic size”) that was originally built in 1925, and it’s only a few hundred yards from the ocean. The beach was just on the other side of a wrought iron fence, so you could look out at the beach-goers and the water. There were lots of other carnival rides, besides the roller coaster, and there were games, and bumper cars, and lots of booths selling food.
Where we were, in the WAVEHOUSE, everything was free, as were all the rides, as long as you had your wrist band on. All the regular drinks were free, and we each received 2 drink tickets for alcohol. I gave away one ticket (to the woman who has been training me at my new job) and had a margarita with the other. But first I had several iced teas.
They served dinner at 4:00pm. They had chicken, hot dogs, hamburgers, sliced pork, veggie burgers (whee!), salad, cole slaw, macaroni and cheese, jasmine coconut rice, mango salsa, and more. I had some salad, a veggie burger with salsa and a piece of cheese, and some rice. It was all delicious. Then, I had some macaroni and cheese. When I was done with dinner, I had a piece of chocolate-dipped cheese cake. It was a relatively small piece, but it was SO good. They also had chocolate dipped bananas.
There were girls standing there all afternoon dipping cheese cake and bananas on sticks. They had soft serve ice cream with all kinds of toppings (that you put on yourself). They had hot coffee and tea.
There were tables all around, so you could sit wherever you wanted and watch the people on the BRUTICUS MAXIMUS. They had several shows with the professionals riding the wave and then you got to watch the employees and their families attempt it. You could either boogie board, where you’re laying down, or surf, which looked more like snowboarding than surfing. It looked REALLY hard, and they said it’s harder than it looks!
The tricks that the professionals were able to do were really amazing. It was fun. The best part was that it was slightly overcast, so it was nice and warm, but not hot, and not sunny. I felt completely comfortable! I wore my black Capri pants, black wedge espadrille mules, and a black/chartreuse top I bought in New Orleans. It was comfortable, yet fashionable.
I mingled a lot, spending some time talking with different people. I had lunch with a woman I’m friendly with, along with her husband and another co-worker. I sat for a while with a girl who has two young daughters who were so cute. I just had to play with them a little. I sat with the girls in HR, who are even more fun out of the office than they are in the office!
I was surprised at how many people I knew. I took a lot of pictures of the people riding the waves, the kids, the crowds, and the WAVEHOUSE itself, which is a really pretty place. There’s a huge cement arch where you used to enter to gain entry to the pool from the beach. It’s dated 1925. Now, it’s the entrance from the beach to the WAVEHOUSE.
Since this was a private event, no one was in the WAVEHOUSE but the firm, but usually it’s open to the public. There was fantastic music all day long, which was supplied by one of the guys on the firm’s “Social Committee.” He just downloaded a lot of his favorite songs on his ipod and I was thrilled with his choices – disco, lots of 80s, tons of Janet Jackson and Madonna, Abba, and some classic rock thrown in, too. Everyone enjoyed the music a lot.
At 7:00pm there was a Sunset Fire Dance with Hawaiian dancers. The girls were beautiful in their red fringed skirts and the guys were amazing tossing around the batons with fire on each end.
After the fire show most people started to leave, but I hung around with some co-workers until 8:00pm. Then, I found my ride and she and her husband convinced me to go on the roller coaster. I told them I haven’t been on one in 25 years, although I used to ride them all the time when I was young. It was REALLY fun! I couldn’t believe I did it.
I screamed the whole time, but I was laughing and screaming. I never would have gone if they didn’t push me, but I was so glad they did. I sat with my friend and her husband sat in front of us. He kept holding up the camera and taking pictures of us, even though he couldn’t see through the viewfinder. He actually caught us both screaming! This really isn’t a bad roller coaster, compared with some of the others I’ve been on, and it only had one really scary drop. The rest was scary because you’d turn the corners so quickly. I have to admit, I do feel it in my neck. I may be too old for this kind of thing!
After the roller coaster, we said our goodbyes and they dropped me off at home. This was a really wonderful event that was enjoyed by all. It was great to see people in a different environment, and a pleasure to meet all their spouses and families. I know everyone will be talking about this for weeks, and the Social Committee did a fantastic job putting it all together.
I got home a little after 9:00pm. I’m absolutely exhausted. I wanted to upload all the pictures, but my battery died, so I have to wait to do that until the battery is recharged. It will take me hours to download all the pictures, edit them, and then upload them onto the blog, so I’ll just do it tomorrow. I just wanted to post this tonight, before I went to sleep!
