Another Great Day in HR!

I’m really enjoying working in HR.  It’s not that I didn’t enjoy working upstairs in Investment Services, but this is SO much more interesting!  It’s all about people!  Hiring people, interviewing people, people looking for work.

Do you know I received a resume today that was ELEVEN pages long?  I don’t think there’s many people who have done enough in their lives to brag about it for 11 pages.  I don’t know what kind of job this guy was going for, but let me tell you that ELEVEN pages is NOT going to make a good impression.  I always think a resume should be one page, unless it’s SO darn impressive that you just can’t contain it to a single 8-½” x 11” piece of paper!  I’m sure even Bill Gates’ resume isn’t 11 pages!

Anyway, a few candidates have head shots on their resume.  They’re small – maybe 1x2 – but I thought that was new!  There was another email that had a picture of a woman’s legs as if she was sitting in the chair with her feet on the desk.  All you could see were her legs and feet.  It said, “I’m just trying to get a foot in the door!”  I thought it was clever, but don’t think it’s very corporate, or professional.  You DO have to admire her originality!

This morning I learned how to take the photo for the ID cards all employees are given, which have to be used to attain access to the elevators and certain floors (especially HR – it’s locked up tighter than Fort Knox!).  The new hire sits down and the camera is pre-focused.  The picture comes up on the computer.  You crop it and send it to the “printer” which is a machine that puts the photo on the ID card and then laminates it.  It’s very cool!

I organized a desk today that had been used as a “dumping ground” for the past few months.  It now looks like a normal desk, although there are lots of piles that someone needs to go through, because I don’t know what’s important and what’s junk.

I started my next John March Mystery by PETER SPIEGELMAN called “Black Maps.”  It was his debut mystery.  I started with RED CAT, his third, and there is already a major character in this one that appeared in RED CAT.  I feel like I already know John March, so I’m already enjoying it.  I have to admit, I only got to read for a while at lunch and then a few minutes before I left.  Otherwise, I was too busy!  Looks like my reading days here are over.  Well, it was nice while it lasted!

As my ride and I were walking to the car she told me how much they already loved me in HR!  I was so thrilled.  She’s so nice.  I’ve really been working hard, trying to show them how grateful I am for this opportunity and how much I appreciate it.  They’re all SO nice to me – but then most everyone in this firm is great!

When I got home I was so happy to see Conrad.  He’s such a cutie and he’s getting more and more acclimated to his new environment.  Eric’s been giving him fruit, and we don't think he has eaten any yet, but today I found a half grape on the floor of his cage.  We didn’t see him eat it, but he must have had some of it.  I told Eric we should have checked for beak marks before we took it away!

Eric made us a delicious dinner of steamed broccoli and those veggie latkes I love so well.  He laughs when I call them latkes, because they’re supposed to be veggie burgers, but to me they look and taste more like a latke.  I LOVE them!

After dinner we watched an episode of MONK that Eric had never seen before.  The new season starts July 18th.  We can’t WAIT!  Then, we watched AMERICA’S GOT TALENT and SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE.  It amazes me how much Eric enjoys these shows and how spot on he usually is with his critiques.  He knows talent when he sees it!

Tomorrow is a half day at work and it’s going to be VERY quiet.  A few of the girls in HR are out and there won’t be much going on.  It will be an easy ½ day and then three days off.  Wheeeee!
