I woke up at 9:30am. The first thing I did was blog, since I was too tired last night (as you know). Then, Eric and I relaxed for a while and watched the elimination show of SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE. Eric said I should decide what we were going to do today. We already knew what we wanted to do tonight. We decided instead of driving someplace, and dealing with parking and traffic (which is difficult at any great spot showing fireworks), we’d take advantage of our proximity to MISSION BAY and walk down to the water.
It was a hot one, and the apartment was as stuffy as usual, so I decided we should go someplace where we could be in air-conditioning. I looked at the schedule for the movie theatre 3 miles away and saw that GET SMART was playing. It’s a movie I really wanted to see, because GET SMART was one of my favorite TV shows when I was growing up, and I LOVE Steve Carell! There was a 3:30pm show, so I told Eric I wanted to do 3 loads of laundry, go food shopping and then we’d come back and relax before heading down to the bay.
He walked me down to the laundry room and I put the three loads in the machines and then he walked back to the apartment and I took off with my little cart to the supermarket. I bought some snacks for tonight and did a regular food shopping for the week. By the time I got back, I put everything away and then it was time to put everything in the dryer. I did my “5 minute steaming” on the clothes I wanted to hang on the line and then left everything else in the dryer and came back up. We hung everything on the line and then we ran out the door to catch the 3:30pm show. We got there just in time for the first preview.
GET SMART was really fun with a great cast – Steve Carell, Anne Hathaway, Dwayne Johnson and Alan Arkin. There are also some great actors in supporting roles and a lot of fabulous cameos (I won’t give them away here!). It was really fast-moving with lots of big laughs (and lots of little laughs, too). We highly recommend it – especially if you liked the TV show!
After the movie, we decided to get a late lunch/early dinner (it was 5:30pm). We drove back to the apartment, parked the car, and walked up the block to La Dolce Vita, our favorite local Italian restaurant. They have a great soup and salad bar. Eric got eggplant parmigiana and I got a halibut special with crabmeat on top and a bed of spinach underneath. Delicious, but we both ate only half of our meal, because we had so much soup and salad!
When we got back to the apartment, Eric took a nap for an hour and I watched UGLY BETTY and talked to Conrad. At 7:30pm we put together a cooler of snacks and drinks and a bag with a blanket, pillow and cuddly jackets and we walked down to the bay. It’s about a mile, but it’s all down hill, so it wasn’t bad at all. We were smart to walk, because we never saw so many cars in the parking lot or the entire area since we moved here. It was crazy!
We found a great spot on the grass where we had a view of the bay all the way from one side to the other. We watched the people enjoying themselves (there was quite a crowd) in and out of the water. When the sun went down, things quieted down and everyone prepared for the fireworks.
My work ride told me that there would be at least 3 different fireworks displays to see and she was right. There were actually about 5 going on, and when they were all done the SEAWORLD fireworks started and they were the closest and most spectacular. We had a great view and it was really nice. Of course, I forgot my camera, but I probably wouldn’t have been able to capture much anyway.
We enjoyed some snacks, some drinks, some ice cream, and the beautiful night and the glorious fireworks. After it was over (about 2 hours had passed) we headed back up the hill. The walk up was definitely harder. I was a lot more tired, it was dark, the streets were crowded with other people, and it was all uphill – a big hill – a very, steep, big, mile-long hill. I definitely felt it in my legs, and I was a little out-of-breath, but it was a good workout.
When we got in, I jumped in the shower (my third today – I think that’s a record!) and then I sat down to blog while Eric watched some show on tornadoes. It was a really fun day. If it wasn’t so hot in the apartment, it would be great, but it’s so stuffy here when it’s hot, so it makes it necessary to get out, because it’s not that hot outside. There’s always a nice breeze and even with the three fans going it’s still SO hot in the living room. The fans seem to bring the cool air into the bedroom, but it never makes its way into the living room.
We have no other plans for the weekend, but I’m sure we’ll find something fun to do. Eric said we could take a drive to a town we’ve never visited before and my work-ride told me that Carlsbad would be a lot of fun, because there are antique shops and lots of great restaurants, so I’m going to google that and see what I can figure out for tomorrow.
I hope you all had a lovely July 4th holiday. I forgot to mention over the last few days that it was my brother-in-law Rich’s birthday, and my sister, Lenae and Rich’s 30th anniversary. So, HAPPY BIRTHDAY and HAPPY ANNIVERSARY to them!
