I Guess I've Got A Cold!

I went to sleep at a relatively normal hour last night (about 12:30pm) and woke up at a relatively normal hour (8:00am).  I didn’t feel great and I was sneezing and blowing my nose all day (instead of just all morning), so I guess I do have a cold.

I know I feel ooky (which is a word I made up which describes how you feel when you’re not actually SICK, but just not feeling well enough to get out there and face the world.  In case you’re unsure, it rhymes with pookie, but I spell it differently – hey – it’s my word!).

Anyway, I caught up on more TV, and finished unpacking.  Okay, so it took me almost 3 days.  I’m a slow unpacker.  Did I ever mention how much I HATE unpacking?  I don’t mind packing at all, but unpacking really gets on my nerves.  I had to hang up all the stuff I didn’t even wear, put away all the jewelry, the shoes, the purses, toiletries, etc., etc.  I finally emptied the big black suitcase I borrowed and will return it when I go to the party with Rosemary on Saturday night.

I’ve been emailing with the girls in HR.  They’re so sweet.  They tell me how much they miss me and can’t wait to see me on Saturday night.  I can’t wait either.  It sounds like so much fun.  It’s at a big hotel in La Jolla, so you know it’s going to be nice.  Some of the girls are staying overnight, so they said we can come up and get dressed in their room if we want.  I’ll get dressed at home and then drop off the suitcase at Rosemary’s, see her place, and then either drive her or follow her to the party.  I told her I’m willing to leave whenever she wants, but she said she may want to take her own car, so she can leave early if she wants.

I made my vegetable soup this afternoon.  I figured it’s probably good medicine for a cold, in case I do have one!  I chopped up celery, mushrooms, cilantro, and fresh spinach and sautéed them in a little olive oil with some garlic.  Then, I added a can of organic stewed tomatoes and a can of organic black beans.  Finally, I added a box of organic vegetable broth.  I let it simmer for about an hour and then turned it off to let it cool.

I had an appointment today at 5:30pm, which I haven’t written about, or told anyone about.  It’s not like it was a secret or anything, it’s just that I wasn’t sure how it would go, or what would happen, so I thought I’d wait until after it was over to write about it.

A few months ago, on DR. PHIL, I learned about an organization called VOICES FOR CHILDREN, which helps abused, neglected, or abandoned children who are living in foster care through a network of CASAs (Court Appointed Special Advocates).  I found out that becoming a CASA allows you to help a foster child by developing a one-on-one relationship, sort of like a big brother or sister, but also making recommendations to the court to ensure that the judge is informed about the child’s unique needs.

I have always enjoyed volunteer work and this sounded like something I would enjoy.  The office of VOICES FOR CHILDREN is just 6 miles away from my apartment.  Unfortunately, since I will be moving back to NY in the spring, I will be unable to train to become a volunteer.  I decided to go to the introductory session anyway, just to learn more about the organization.

I loved everything I heard about CASA and look forward to volunteering in New York, since CASA is a nation-wide endeavor.

I got home at around 7:30pm and had a bowl of my vegetable soup, which was quite delicious (if I do say so myself) and quite filling.  I watched TV and worked on the computer.

There was a new holiday episode of MONK and I finally got to see it.  It was so funny.  There was one scene where I was laughing so hard.  That show is the greatest!  New episodes start on January 9th.  Can't wait!

Tomorrow I have some paperwork to do and need to go to the post office, too.  I have my usual appointment (which I missed the last two Thursdays), so I’ll probably go out later in the afternoon.  I’m hoping to feel better when I wake up tomorrow.  In the meantime, I’m lucky I’m off this week, and don’t have too much to do, so I can rest and relax until I feel better!
